Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
