No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
